Japanese Government Scholarship Programs

2025/4/17

Each year the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sport, Science and Technology (MEXT) offers scholarships to international students from around the world the opportunity to live and study in Japan. Unlike most other scholarships, MEXT scholarships are full scholarships that cover tuition, living expenses and roundtrip airfare. From the US around 25 students receive a MEXT scholarship to study in Japan every year.

Information on these scholarships is included below, and we encourage you to take advantage of these unique opportunities to learn more about Japan, its people, and its culture. Please note that the Consulate General of Japan in San Francisco can only accept scholarship applications from US citizens who live, study or work in Northern California and Nevada. If you currently reside outside of our consulate's jurisdiction, please contact our office for information on how to reach your nearest Consulate General of Japan.
